Meet Brett Shaw

Brett Shaw is a licensed architect with over two decades of experience in residential architecture, fire-damaged home reconstruction, and light industrial design. Known for his ability to guide clients through California’s most complex permitting and zoning requirements, Brett has led the successful rebuild of over 100 homes across Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Sonoma County.

His technical expertise, deep knowledge of fire zone compliance, and calm, solution-oriented approach have made him a go-to resource for homeowners navigating post-disaster recovery. Brett is not only dedicated to creating safe and beautiful spaces but also to supporting clients emotionally and logistically through each phase of rebuilding.

Brett literally changed my life! I never thought the Woolsey Fire would be a blessing in disguise, but I can confidently declare that it was. November 8th 2018, the Woolsey Fire came roaring through Malibu and destroyed my guesthouse, barns, horse stables, fences and outbuildings. Thankfully my main house was spared (as were all the animals since I evacuated with them). I hired Brett shortly after I was able to move back into my house and we immediately started the design and permitting process. He adeptly helped me navigate the Malibu permitting maze with the various different departments. Since I have a 5-acre property, he had somewhat of a blank canvas in which to design the perfect enclave that both maximized Malibu’s rebuild specifications and also incorporated my future lifestyle needs. Under Malibu’s expedited fire rebuild process, we were able to secure multiple permits for a new state-of-the-art OWTS required by the city to support the expanded square footage and fixtures; the new and improved guesthouse (+10%) which was relocated from the original location to take advantage of a magnificent ocean view; a new pool near the main house; a new 2-car garage; and last but not least, a 1000 SF expansion of the main house, adding two additional bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, an expanded chef’s kitchen and adjacent sun room, and an outdoor entertaining area. Ten months after construction began, we completed the guesthouse. Four months later, we completed the main house, pool, etc. His vision of what was possible allowed me to transform my life as I entered retirement age. I was able to rent out the 4000 SF main house and move into my new and improved 880 SF guesthouse, generating passive income that not only pays my mortgage, taxes, insurance, and living expenses, but also allows me to contribute significantly to retirement savings.

We have had the opportunity to work with Brett Shaw General Contractor on both a home remodel as well as a new home construction project.

There are several reasons why we went with Brett and his team; In addition to being a skilled contractor, he is also a talented architect. Having that experience as being a detail oriented architect allows him a unique ability to address and resolve problems which can and often do occur in the field. Field conditions or the plans themselves may not accurately represent the desired final result. He efficiently and effectively addressed all field issues, working with us and the architect to achieve pleasing and economical results. BSGC are strong problem solvers, not problem creators.

Regarding ‘value engineering’, during the design phase we were able to work together with Brett and the architect in a way which produced significant cost savings while producing a beautiful design.

Communication is important part of the process that we felt is another benefit of woking with the BSGC team. BSGC’s on site staff was conscientious and paid attention to the detailing. The result was that their quality of workmanship was outstanding. Also, we had weekly site meetings where among other things we reviewed the project schedule. BSGC provided an easy to understand flow chart style schedule which helped keeping us informed as to the progress of our project. It should be noted that both of our projects were completed on time and under budget.

In summary, the best thing I can state about Brett Shaw GC is that we would not hesitate using Brett and his team again for any future projects.
